Contract awarded for final section of Karlsruhe-Basel line

December 6, 2019 – 10:21 am

The design contract for the final section of the line upgrade/new line between Karlsruhe and Basel has been awarded to, among others, DB Engineering & Consulting (DB E&C). This completes Europe’s most important freight corridor Rotterdam-Cologne-Basel-Milan-Genoa.

In early December, the contract for the final section of the line upgrade/new line between Karlsruhe and Basel was awarded to the consortium of Schüssler-Plan, Krebs+Kiefer Ingenieure, Mailänder Consult, ZPP and DB E&C. The 45-km-long section with the key transport hub of Freiburg central station is situated between the municipalities of Riegel and Buggingen. The goal of the upgrade project is to enable a maximum speed of 200 km/h along with a consequent reduction in travel time.

The overall design services include all the specialist disciplines, which, for the first time in a project of this size, will be processed throughout using the methodology Building Information Modeling (BIM). One of the highlights is the Batzenberg tunnel at Schallstadt with an expected length of 2000 m.

Within the consortium, Region Southwestern Germany of DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH will be responsible for the entire electromechanical engineering while also making contributions to BIM coordination, structural engineering, transport facility planning and construction operations.
