BIM – Building Information Modeling

New level of consulting, planning, and implementation of infrastructure projects

The increasing complexity of construction work requires the use of new methods and modern equipment that make conventional planning processes more efficient and also increase projects’ transparency. Using the BIM method, DB Engineering & Consulting can deliver a new degree of quality for consulting, planning and implementation services throughout the entire lifecycle of an infrastructure-related facility – for example at Hannover main station in Germany:

What is building information modeling (BIM)?

“Building information modeling (BIM) is a term used to describe a collaborative work approach. Based on digital models, it can be used to compile and manage a consistent repository of a building’s information and data that is relevant for its entire lifecycle. This information can also be shared between all parties using transparent communication, or it can be forwarded for further processing.”*

What are the benefits of using BIM?

Greater efficiency when planning, constructing and operating infrastructure facilities

The BIM approach is based on an integrated system of geometrical information, data, and documents within a single information model that can be accessed by all project team members via a common data environment (CDE). Thanks to this collective, up-to-date database, it is easy to identify information gaps and conflicts quickly and so apply the right solution to resolve them. The transparency that this creates benefits everyone working on the project, and it promotes efficiency.

Higher planning quality  and shorter planning times
  • Standardization of the planning process (modular system/object libraries)
  • Simplified three-dimensional reasoning to identify potential clashes in-project and with external systems
  • Better variant and production analyses (virtual construction)
  • In-depth communication among project team members
Greater cost security
  • More accurate data regarding quantities/costs in early planning stages
  • Transparent negotiations regarding the agreed cost model
Greater deadline-related certainty
  • Construction process simulations in integrated deadline models
  • Better coordination between interface points for construction stages and technical disciplines
Enhanced acceptance levels
  • Visualizing complex overall contexts concerning a building
  • Easy generation of variant assessments
Improved lifecycle assessment
  • Energy and CO2 balance analyses based on the model
  • Simulation of operations before starting construction
  • Timely, full handover of digital construction documents
