Various construction projects are already underway in the Free State to modernize the Bavarian railroad and make it fit for the future. We at DB Engineering & Consulting are making our contribution in numerous projects, some of which we would like to present to you below:
Electrical overhead line for Upper Bavaria
The line from Munich to Freilassing via MĂĽhldorf forms part of the MĂĽhldorf “line star”, also designated upgraded line 38. Equipping with an electrical overhead line is planned along 145 kilometers of track for the non-electrified and mainly single-track sections Between Markt Schwaben and Ampfing as well as TĂĽssling and Freilassing, the line will be upgraded to double-tracking over a total of 103 kilometers. When services commence, vehicles will be able to travel with a top-line speed of 200 kilometers per hour. To enable shorter headways, there will also be more blocks and the control-command and signaling systems will be modernized. The European Train Control System (ETCS) will be used as a standard. Upgrading accessibility at the 19 stations and stops concerned will create more attractive options in terms of access and transfer. In connection with the speed increase, a total of 166 bridges and 23 railroad crossings will be built or refurbished. DB Engineering and Consulting’s responsibilities in this project include design, a feasibility study, and construction supervision.
More freight on the Eastern Corridor
The Marktredwitz–Regensburg line acts as a link from Scandinavia and the German seaports via central Germany to Bavaria and Austria. It will be electrified as part of the Southern Eastern Corridor project. Electrification is expected to improve operating quality and increase capacity. The aims of the project are to relieve congestion on the existing main feeder lines with a large-scale shift of rail freight traffic heading for Austria to the Eastern Corridor and to improve the utilization of existing tracks by making more efficient use of the Eastern Corridor. DB Engineering & Consulting is responsible for designing the sections from Regensburg to Irrenlohe and Irrenlohe to Weiden.
Upgrading the Brenner Corridor
The upgrade of the Brenner Railroad Corridor between Munich and Verona is of central importance to the decarbonization of transport in transalpine freight transport and is one of the European Union’s top 3 projects. A strong increase in rail freight transport is expected as a result of the opening of the Brenner Base Tunnel. A four-track upgrade has been agreed on an international basis. The line speed is to be 230 km/h. The elimination of steep gradients represents an enormous benefit to rail freight transport It will make the line more economical and more competitive compared to the road, which is currently characterized by miles of traffic jams. 2.8 million truck transits rolled over the Brenner Highway in 2019. Driving one behind the other, that is a line that stretches more than once around the equator. DB Engineering & Consulting has been commissioned with the project design and supporting structure planning.
2nd Munich S-Bahn core route
The 2nd Munich core route is the city’s largest transportation construction project. The Munich S-Bahn carries around 840,000 passengers a day, making it one of the largest S-Bahn systems in Germany, and it is now reaching the limits of its capacity. In order to relieve the strain on the line, a 2nd core route is being built over a distance of around ten kilometers between Laim Station in the west and Leuchtenbergring Station in the east. A seven-kilometer tunnel between the Main Station and Ostbahnhof forms the main section of the new core route.
DB Engineering & Consulting’s construction supervision experts will be contributing their expertise as part of the technical, rail operation, and contractual full services on the approximately 2 km long Overground West section of the line, one of the five main sections of the large-scale 2nd S-Bahn core route project.
