New construction logistics for Düsseldorf stabling station
The Düsseldorf stabling station in the Oberbilk district is a central hub for the stabling, provision and maintenance of regional and long-distance trains in the Düsseldorf railway junction. After decades in operation, the facility has reached the end of its useful life and will be extensively modernized from August 2025 to meet the growing demands of rail traffic.
Numerous technical and infrastructural improvements are being implemented as part of the project. One focus is the construction of a new electronic interlocking system (ESTW), which will enable modern control and monitoring of railway operations.
The project also includes the renewal of the entire overhead line and heating systems as well as the implementation of a modern track field lighting concept. In addition to the technical updates, extensive civil engineering and structural engineering work will be carried out. This includes the installation of cable routes and mast foundations, the construction of a new modular building for the ESTW and the demolition of the old signal box buildings, which no longer meet today’s standards.
A central component of the project is the use of digital technologies for construction and logistics planning. GPS trackers are used to record all vehicles in the construction site area in real time. The collected data is visualised on a track graph and displayed in a control centre view. This digital monitoring should not only increase the efficiency of construction work, but also improve safety and coordination on the site.
A detailed construction schedule and a complex logistics concept will be drawn up before the work begins. A particular focus will be placed on keeping the restrictions for ongoing railroad operations and adjacent workshops as low as possible.
DB InfraGO is relying on the expertise of DB Engineering & Consulting to implement this challenging project. Our experts are responsible for both digital construction logistics and overall coordination and are contributing their experience from comparable projects such as the ESTW Duisburg and RRX Leverkusen. Our proven expertise in construction supervision and project management forms the basis for smooth handling and successful completion of the modernization work.
