Königsborn site refurbishment
The Königsborn site in Biederitz is a historical and key component of DB Bahnbau Gruppe. Servicing, repairing and maintaining on-track machines and locomotives have a long tradition here. With its cross-discipline approach, the site has developed into a major hub in the company’s network. However, the requirements of recent years have shown that the existing technical facilities and infrastructures can no longer handle today’s or tomorrow’s challenges. Outdated technology, a great deal of overdue maintenance and limited capacities are hindering operations while workloads are growing.
Faced with these challenges, a comprehensive modernization and reorganization concept was developed, comprising a total of eight sub-projects. DB Engineering & Consulting is supporting the project with its extensive expertise, working in close collaboration with the construction companies involved. The aim is to transform Königsborn into a modern, high-performance depot.
The project focuses on the new construction of a modern workshop for the heavy maintenance of DB Bahnbau Gruppe’s rail vehicle fleet. Additional components and ancillary shops as well as administrative and social areas will be created in the side aisles of the large hall, offering employees optimal working conditions. A new train washing facility will also be built to enable the cleaning of different classes of trains. The existing washing facilities will be dismantled.
Another key component of the rebuilding is the construction of a new central warehouse. This warehouse will create one central storage location for materials previously distributed across seven smaller storage facilities and 26 locations. In future, all materials and spare parts required for maintenance will be stored efficiently in a compact outdoor storage area and a modern steel warehouse. This step will not only help to improve logistics but also significantly increase operational efficiency.
In addition, the track systems will undergo extensive modernization to further improve operations. Based on detailed surveying results, a new track geometry project was developed that not only enables efficient switching but furthermore integrates switching and traffic routes to ensure accessibility to all work stations. All roads, paths and plazas will be redesigned as part of a harmonized overall concept. The existing infrastructure, including pipework, cables and ramps, will either be secured, relocated or completely rebuilt.
Without these modernization measures, operations in Königsborn would remain considerably restricted. Implementing them will create a modern, efficient location that meets the rail sector’s requirements while providing a sustainable basis for meeting future challenges.
